ARTS

Extraordinary night openings of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Leonardo’s The Last Supper) and Brera Gallery for WCN2009 registered delegate on May 23 and May 25.

Adjoining the fifteenth – century church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the refectory of the ancient Dominican convent contains one of the world’s most celebrated paintings, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. Painted between 1494 and 1498, in the reign of Ludovico il Moro, it has suffered because of the technique adopted. Restoration, completed in May 1999, revealed areas of the original paintwork.
Despite its decayed state, the figures of Christ and the twelve apostles preserve a strangely moving power, both dramatic and sacred. On the wall opposite The Last Supper, is the Crucifixion (1495) by Giovanni Donato Montorfano. This impressive fresco extends into the lunettes as well.

The Brera Gallery is located inside the homonymous building which hosts other cultural institutions, such as the Brera Library, the Astronomic Observatory, The Botanical Garden, The Lombard Institute for Science and Art and the Academy of Fine Arts. The building, constructed on the site of a 14th century convent of the Umiliati order, was subsequently taken over by the Jesuits, who founded a school there.  It acquired its current aspect at the beginning of the 17th century, thanks to the work of Francesco Maria Ricchino, with some additions by Giuseppe Piermarini in the following century. The greater part of the collection – which were originally intended as study materials for the students of the Academy – is made up of paintings from churches and monasteries closed, above all, during the Napoleonic period, but has been steadily enriched through exchanges, donations and purchases. The Gallery has acquired even more stature since 1882 when it was separated from the Academy of Fine Arts and opened to the public.
WCN2009 delegates will be given highlights of the Brera Gallery’s most famous partings expressively named the 12 pearls of Brera. Mantegna (Cristo morto), Giovanni e Gentile Bellini (La predicazione di San Marco), Tintoretto (Il ritrovamento del corpo di San Marco),  Raffaello (Lo Sposalizio della Vergine), Crivelli,  Correggio (Adorazione dei Magi),  Piero della Francesca (Pala di Montefeltro), Bramante (Cristo alla colonna),  Caravaggio (Cena in Emmaus),  Hayez (Bacio), Pelizza da Volpedo (Fiumana),Canaletto.
