Welcome to the official website of the WCN 2009.
The WCN 2009 is a joint meeting between ERA-EDTA and ISN.
Dear Colleagues,
As President of World Congress of Nephrology 2009 I wanted to express my deep gratitude to all those who have contributed to the organization and realization of this great event.
After taking a bit of time to ask as many people as possible about the Congress, I’m glad to inform you that every single reply was enthusiastic: from the most important ones regarding the scientific programme, to the ones concerning the cultural events programme, as well as the ones about the ERA–EDTA Secretariat and Local Committee organizations.
I would like to thank all the members of the Scientific Committee, chaired by Prof Kai-Uwe Eckardt and Prof Pierre Ronco, for their hard work in producing an extraordinary Scientific Programme. ‘The best presentation in the world’ (I am quoting other people’s words) was created by choosing from a wide selection of lectures and symposia covering the various aspects of basic and clinical nephrology, as well as several fundamental aspects of biological sciences and the most recent researches in the field. Obviously a big thanks must also be given to Prof Peter Stenvinkel who did an excellent job as head of the Paper Selection Committee.
I wish also to thank the Local Organizing Committee, chaired by Prof Diego Brancaccio and co-chaired by Prof Giovanni Cancarini and Prof Piergiorgio Messa, for the outstanding Social Programme that they were able to produce, which included amazing arts events, such as the extraordinary night openings of the Brera Gallery and of Santa Maria delle Grazie to visit Leonardo’s Last Supper; the incredible music events such as the beautiful concert held in Sant’Ambrogio Church, dedicated to ‘The Great Venetian Music’, and the enchanting special performance of ‘Assassinio nella cattedrale’ held at the illustrious Opera House ‘Teatro Alla Scala’.
My biggest thank-you is for ERA-EDTA and for ISN, their respective Presidents Prof Gérard M. London and Prof Eberhard Ritz, and their other Officers Prof Rosanna Coppo, Prof John Fehally, Prof Adrian Covic and the late Prof Steven Hebert, who have teamed together in a Joint Organizing Committee, achieving world-record results: however I cannot forget the former Presidents Prof Jorge Cannata Andia, Prof Jan Weening and Prof William Couser, who made the first steps of this big plan, choosing Milan as the venue and me as the President.
Finally, I wish to thank the ERA-EDTA Congress Office, led by Anna Maria Manara, and to acknowledge the hard work of all the team, with Silvia Menoni dedicated to the scientific program, Isabel Fontana responsible for the registrations, Valentina Cocchi taking good care of the social program, and Monica Fontana who was a wonderful presenter.
All these great results, in a congress with 10’000 delegates, wouldn’t have been possible without a strong team-effort and without your willingness to help contribute to every single detail that then produced the huge success of the event.
Again, many thanks to you all for your total commitment and the professionalism demonstrated during the long time spent organizing such a successful Congress, for all these reasons I couldn’t be more proud to have been the President of the WCN 2009.
Best wishes
